Jackie Schmitt died suddenly of an aneurysm on November 21, 1990. Because of her passion for leadership development in ELW® her family—husband Frank and daughters Tami and Brenda— requested that memorials be designated to ELW in support of a leadership fund in her name.
The National ELW board is authorized to disburse both principal and income from this fund for ELW purposes.
Some of the kinds of projects the Jackie Schmitt Leadership Fund has supported since its inception:
- Subsidies to allow women to attend conferences on a variety of topics.
- Leadership training events for Synodical presidents and treasurers.
Gifts made to this fund are recognized in Esprit magazine (unless otherwise indicated).

2008 Women's Convention Fundraiser
It’s on again—the competition between Synodical ELWs to support the Jackie Schmitt Leadership Fund at the National ELW Convention, July 10-13, 2008, in Calgary, Alberta. This fund makes possible leadership training throughout the year at the Synodical and National ELW levels.
The goal of this fundraiser will be to sponsor as many stars as possible to be hung above the tables at the Starry, Starry Night Banquet, illuminating the cosmos above.
Congregational or Conference ELWs can honour as many women as they wish. The more the brighter the sky!!
Or,
Individuals may also send in contributions to honour someone special.
So,
1. Think about a woman in your life who has been a guiding light or a shining example of leadership or someone who has modeled our theme “Be Not Afraid.”
2. Beam your contributions of the following amounts to the ELW office:
Large Star $20.00
Medium Star $15.00
Small Star $10.00
Your bright lights will be honoured with their names radiantly penned on their very own star.
