  • Every city has homeless shelters, yet homelessness is on the increase in this country. This is a reflection of the state of our society and how we relate and care for one another.

Is our 'church home' prepared to act non-judgmentally? Is the faith that lives within us prompting us to be in relationship with the homeless?

You are encouraged to read the documents below and discern if you are being called to action. Here are some things you can do:

1. Purchase No Place Like Home from the ELW office and begin to examine your attitudes towards the homeless. This resource is great for ages 16-100!

2. Read the background information as reported by the United Nations in the Kothari Statement and think about what you have seen in your community with regards to homeless people. Are there people asking for money on street corners? Are there shelters? Are their soup kitchens? Is there affordable housing? Spend some time looking at neighbourhoods in your area with renewed vision. Suburbs or city centres—they all have their issues!

3. Review the sample letter to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and decide if you might also like to write a letter. Do not be afraid to speak out on injustices towards the poor.
